What exactly is medical nutrition therapy?
As a Registered Dietitian, my training is focused on medical nutrition therapy and using an evidence based approach to get the best outcomes. Registered dietitians have 5 to 6 years of education, do a 1200 hour internship, take a national registration exam, and maintain licensure requirements and continuing education requirements in order to keep their credentials. We are not your average nutritionists, and you can expect high quality care and information from an RD! Medical nutrition therapy can be essential for recovering from disordered eating, as we will explore true science behind nutrition and not just internet fallacy. Myth-busting nutrition misinformation is my favorite part of my job, and I have plenty of information and resources after teaching college nutrition courses and seeking out books, podcasts, and resources from other non-diet dietitians. Although scientific evidence is important, at the end of the day I strive to provide client centered care and respect. You as an individual know your needs and body best, I am simply here to provide information and guidance as you rediscover what it feels like to reconnect with your body and intuition about food and fuel.
Assessments
Assessments typically take 90 minutes, so you can expect the first appointment to take a bit longer than follow ups. In this appointment we will review your personal and family medical history, medications, mental health, intake and activity levels, sleep patterns, as well as diet culture, body image, and relationship with food. This appointment can bring up a lot of emotion, so please schedule it on a day that you can have ample time to take care of yourself and reflect on whatever this session brings up.
Follow ups
Follow ups will typically be 30-60 minutes depending on your individual needs and accessibility to MNT based on your insurance or out of pocket access. In follow ups, we will explore deeper into topics that have been mentioned in the assessment, or it can be guided by what you want and need! I love to think of myself as a “food therapist” meaning that we can explore whatever topic feels important to you each week and continue to build off of it. While I may have ideas and a plan for overall treatment, those who bring questions and interact during nutrition therapy sessions get the most out of treatment.
